Amniotic Stem Cell Therapy

What Are Amniotic Stem Cells?

Amniotic fluid features high concentrations of some of the most fundamental cells in our body, including stem cells, proteins, cytokins and other important compounds. Studies have shown this fluid to be naturally regenerative with inflammation reducing properties. It may even help reduce the appearance of scars for some patients.

Amniotic fluid is the fluid surrounding a fetus in pregnancy.  During most pregnancies, this fluid is thrown away after birth. Now, however, consenting mothers of cesarian section babies can donate this fluid. It is important to note, these cells come from the amniotic sac and are not part of the embryo.

What Benefits Can This Treatment Offer?

Amniotic stem cell therapy is a very safe and effective treatment. There is no risk of rejection in the patient. The fluid contains the growth factors that help to stimulate tissue growth and stem cell activity while reducing inflammation. It also contains hyaluronic acid, which acts as a lubricant and promotes cartilage growth.

How Is the Amniotic Fluid Obtained?

Amniotic fluid is sourced from cesarian section births. The amniotic fluid used by Non-Surgical Orthopaedics has been donated by women who have given birth, and then purified in it’s pre-injectible form.

Although alternative regenerative therapies, like platelet-rich plasma (PRP) and bone marrow aspirate concentrate (BMAC), contain high concentrations of your own stem cells to aid in healing, they don’t boast the same level of growth factors present in amniotic fluid.

How to Avoid Fraud with Amniotic Stem Cells

There are a lot of bad actors in the stem cell injection industry, and it’s important for patients considering regenerative therapies to be cautious with who they trust. You should be skeptical if you’re seeing marketing or going to seminars with speakers who suggest amniotic stem cell injections are a miracle cure, especially when the clinic isn’t run by licensed medical doctors and orthopaedists.

Regenerative therapies hold promise as a treatment to promote healing in patients with osteoarthritis as well as those with joint, tendon and ligament injuries. However, amniotic stem cell therapies do not contain live embryonic stem cells. Amniotic fluid therapies do not possess the pluripotent properties that enable some stem cells to indefinitely produce a targeted cell type.

What amniotic fluid can do is boost the regenerative capabilities of your body’s own stem cells while also reducing inflammation. The high concentrations of hyaluronic acid may also aid in the repair and lubrication of damaged cartilage.

Be sure to talk to your doctor about what you can expect from regenerative medicine treatments like amniotic stem cell injections. Our team at Non-Surgical Orthopaedics is committed to being honest and transparent with our patients about our treatment options and the potential for results.
